LeFleur’s Bluff First Saturday Family Bird Walks

Time: 8:00 – 10:00 am
Location: LeFleur’s Bluff State Park (LBSP), 3315 Lakeland Terrace, Jackson, MS 39216 (monthly, except Jan, Jul, and Aug – for family groups, beginners, and experts)

Monthly family bird walks, initiated by a small group of JAS members in 2000, are some of our most popular birding activities. We “bird” the trails and the picnic area of LeFleur’s Bluff State Park, including Mayes Lake. Great birding opportunities abound in the park’s varied habitat along the Pearl River, with upland ridges, oxbow lakes, and beautiful cypress swamps.  Birds we see vary by season and include warblers, woodpeckers, tanagers, flycatchers, owls, ducks, herons & egrets, and a possible Osprey or Bald Eagle. Some, like the stunning Prothonotary Warblers nest in the park, others are seen only during their spring and fall migration. In 2000 JAS established a Prothonotary Warbler Nest Box Trail by placing 25 nest boxes in swampy areas to enhance nesting opportunities for this bird of conservation concern. Some boxes can be viewed from the trail. You never know what you might see or hear at LBSP – from July 2022 until Nov 2023 the park hosted a Limpkin, a seldom seen visitor from Florida!

This is a fun and rewarding bird watching experience for first timers, as well as seasoned ornithologists. Each walk is led by an expert JAS birder, and leaders are often knowledgeable about the plant and animal species encountered along the trails. This is a great way to start your birding/nature adventure. Our JAS expert birders are always available to share their knowledge and birding tips. Bring your binoculars, water, and a snack.

Access to LeFleur’s Bluff State Park is at the Mayes Lakes Campground entrance off Lakeland Drive. Meet in the parking lot of the picnic & pavilion area. We submit a record of all bird sightings to E-Bird (https://ebird.org) after each walk to document the birds of the park.

Park Entrance Fee: $2.00 per person.
