Jackson Audubon Bird Camp For Kids

JAS Bird Camp for Kids in partnership with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Spring or Summer each year (date to be announced)

Ages: 10-14

Location: Mississippi Museum of Natural Science
2148 Riverside Drive,
Jackson, MS 39202

Description:
The JAS Summer Birding Camp provides a great opportunity for kids to learn about wild birds, discover the joys of bird watching, and practice skills of a citizen scientist. This week-long day camp teaches campers sound scientific principles of bird biology, migration, and the need for global conservation.  They participate in fun educational games, birding walks, and each child builds an Eastern Bluebird nest box to take home.  We also have biologists from state and federal wildlife agencies as guest speakers. We will focus on the basics of bird watching including proper use of binoculars, bird identification skills, bird habitats through outdoor birding activities on the campus and trails of the museum grounds and LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.  Getting kids involved in birding and outdoor nature study will hopefully plant the seed for them to become future birders and stewards of nature.

Our JAS summer or spring bird camp plays a critical role in getting kids outside to learn about birds and nature in a fun, informal setting.  We hope to instill in each student an awareness of the value of birds and their habitats. Our camp is led by an all-volunteer group of trained biologists and expert bird enthusiasts.

Campers will search for birds on the Museum campus each morning and learn to identify them by sight and sound.  Campers bring their own lunch and drink each day and bring sunscreen and bug spray.

“It’s a wonderful way to get your child in touch with nature, and learn observational skills and other benefits.”

Jackson Audubon conducts our Birding Camp with no gain in profits and provides this camp as a service to our community according to our mission: “Promoting Conservation and Education through Birding.”
